Case study: locating utility infrastructure

Background

Our client is an international group of companies with a specialised line of products for locating and maintaining buried pipes and cables. They are constantly improving the performance of their products.

The opportunity

They wished to develop a sophisticated algorithm to help them refine and test low latency products that precisely locate position and orientation of subterranean pipe boring machines. Using accurate sensing and control our partner could avoid unnecessary trench digging and efficiently drill under busy roads without disturbing traffic flows

Our approach

In a phased program of modelling and practical work, Sentec devised an inductive location technique, including multivariate minimization algorithm to allow steering of the boring machine.
